Success Story: Lena Builds Her Confidence and Strength
Lena has been training with Cory from Vintage Fitness virtually since the spring of 2020. Lena’s daughter, Rita has been a big part of her success. It would have been so easy to decide it was too hard to co-ordinate personal training for her mom.
Some of the barriers that Lena and Rita faced were:
- Pandemic meant that the training had to be virtual
- English isn't Lena’s first language
- Lena has a heart condition which means time spent in the hospital
- Lena was feeling tired and unmotivated to exercise
They made the decision to try to make training work despite all of their barriers because the goal of improving Lena’s health with exercise was worth it. Cory and the whole Vintage Fitness team is proud of what Lena has accomplished and learned how adult children can successfully support their older parents to incorporate regular exercise into their lives.
Here are Lena’s daughter Rita’s thoughts:
“I can't believe it's been a year since my mom started with Cory! Cory truly has been a wonderful trainer and motivator. This whole experience has really boosted my mom's confidence and I know that she feels stronger. She is able to do movements that she hasn't been able to do for a long time. I know she misses her aquafit days and walking the track at Variety Village though. In fact, last August, my mom was feeling so amazing that she actually wanted to stop working out as she didn't think she needed to anymore!
My mom had a huge set back mentally and physically when she went into the hospital in September with heart failure. With all the covid restrictions, we were limited in seeing her during that time. This was devastating to my mom but she got through it. She's a tough cookie. She was bedridden and hooked up to a variety of machines for a week while they tried to figure out how to get her heart rate down and figure out the cause of it all. When the physiotherapists came to assess her before her discharge; they were amazed at how quickly she was able to bounce back and how much strength she was able to maintain during that time.
Once she was ready, we tried to get back on track with Cory, but she was so discouraged at how much she was unable to do. With Cory's encouragement and "baby steps" she started to feel like her old self again. Unfortunately, she had another setback and she was back in the hospital in November as the medication was not working. This time, the covid restrictions took another toll on my mom, both mentally and physically. This time, we were not able to visit at all. Other than our daily calls; my mom felt completely isolated.
In the last few months, I can see her strength coming back as is her confidence. This is all thanks to Cory and the consistency and appropriate challenges of the program.”
Cory and the whole Vintage Fitness team is proud of what Lena has accomplished and learned how adult children can successfully support their older parents to incorporate regular exercise into their lives through her daughter Rita.
