Tips for keeping your exercise resolutions alive

It is January 13th, the shine of your new years hopes of doing more exercise in 2017 may have started to wear thin.  Changing habits is very difficult and it is great that you are reading this blog to get a bit of support.

Vintage Fitness is an at home personal training company specialized to work with people over 50 in the greater Toronto area.  Our team of ten personal who are experts in 50+ fitness, have a few tips to keep your exercise resolutions alive.

  1. BE SPECIFIC
Exercise goals can fail if they look more like wishes than goals- instead of “I want to be stronger” how about “I want my legs to become strong enough to squat into a chair 10 times with ease”
  2. MAKE THEM VISIBLE
Write the goal in a place that you will see it a few times a day—maybe on your phone or on your fridge.
  3. CAPTURE THE “WHY”
The reason that exercise goals such as “I want to workout more often” fail is that it captures the activity
  4. CAREFULLY PLAN
Think through how you are going to achieve your goal.  If your goal is “getting stronger and more flexible” what information do you need to gather to make this goal real? You may need
    1. A baseline of your current strength and flexibility to have someone to track from.  This can be done with a personal trainer or by searching on-line fitness assessments and find one that fits you.
    2. An understanding of the best exercises for your goals as well as challenges such as past injuries and health conditions.
    3. A well laid out exercise plan and way to track completion of workouts
  5. SCHEDULE IT IN
Sit with your calendar and put your workouts in like you would any other appointment.  For the first 3 months of your program protect those time slots until exercise becomes a habit in your life.
