Exercise Tips for Snowbirds
When I saw the snow flurries in the sky yesterday it felt official-- winter in Toronto has arrived. Many Vintage Fitness personal training clients head to warmer places this time of year and I wanted to share some tips on sticking with your exercise program when you travel.
- Plan ahead
Include planning your exercise routine while you are away on your to-do list before you go. Think through what exercise facilities are at your travel spot, what exercise equipment you need to bring with you and where you are going to fit exercise into your daily and weekly routines.
- Create an activity goal
Think through how long you plan to be away for an create an appropriate activity goal. If you are going to Florida for 8 weeks you could plan to walk 3 times a week, swim or do aquafit twice a week and weight train twice a week. You could also set your activity goal up as a challenge to yourself: At the end of my 8 weeks in Florida I want to be able to walk 5km with ease.
- Stay connected with your trainer back home

- Book a tour before you arrive
Call ahead to your snowbird destination and book a tour of the fitness facilities towards the end of your first week there.
- Try something new
Your body and brain will adapt and change to the challenges that you give them. If you have been wintering at the same sunny spot for the last couple of years try a new activity this winter. As long as the activity feels right for your body it will be great for both your body and brain health to try something new.
