Questions to ask before choosing a personal trainer

Personal training can be a transformational if you choose the right trainer for you and are committed to doing the work outside of your sessions.

Here are a few questions to consider before making your final decision about working with a personal trainer:

  1. Would you enjoy spending time with the person?
Personal training often involves spending quite a bit of time together and it is important that your personalities gel.
  2. Does the trainer have the right qualifications and experience to handle my fitness goals and health issues?
Personal trainers take a base course often through the Canadian Fitness Professionals here in Canada or ACE in the US.  I would recommend working with a trainer who has taken additional specializations to make sure they are qualified to work with you.  The trainers at Vintage Fitness for example work solely with people over 50 and are all older adult fitness specialists.  This means that they know how to modify exercises for arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis and a whole host of other health issues.
  3. Can I meet the trainer and have a few sessions before committing to a large package?
Don’t commit to a large personal training package before you work with the trainer a few times and make sure that the relationship is right for you.  Vintage Fitness offers a free “meet and greet” to any potential clients so they get a chance to meet the trainer before investing.
  4. What are my current barriers to exercise and what plan does the trainer have to help me overcome these barriers?
A good personal trainer will take the time to talk to you about what is stopping you from being more active now and develop a plan to help you to change habits and blast through those barriers.
