Top 12 reasons people fall

I hope that you are enjoying the glimpse of spring weather that we are having here in Toronto.  A real concern for older adults is the risk of falling.  This risk is real and should be activity managed given that 1 out of 3 seniors fall at least once a year.  In the wellness toolkit there is an extensive fall prevention presentation

Healthy Together Workshop

The top 12 reasons that older adults fall are:

  1. Risk taking behaviour such as using a unstable step ladder or chair to change a light bulb
  2. Balance and stability issues
  3. Poor Nutrition
  4. Dizziness
  5. Home safety such as lots of throw rugs around the house that are easy to trip on
  6. Bathroom safety
  7. Blood Pressure Issues
  8. Depression
  9. Leg Strength
  10. Medication
  11. Incorrect footwear--there is a great slide in the presentation which outlines what you should look for in a shoe
  12. Vision issues especially depth perception when going up and down stairs
