How I Reversed My Type 2 Diabetes Naturally
My name is Yvette, and along with being addicted to Pickleball and running a farm animal sanctuary, I am a member of the Vintage Fitness client care team. VF owner Leigh asked me to share my story, in the hopes it might help or even inspire some of you.
In 2019, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. I also live with hypothyroid disease, so I was not doing well. I felt uncomfortable, exhausted, and like my brain and body were not working properly. I could not regulate my body temperature, my joints ached, my anxiety was through the roof, and I could not climb a flight of stairs without getting out of breath.
For a while, I just accepted that this was how my life was going to be. I was too tired to even think about an action plan.
I never imagined that a few years later I would be managing my diabetes and high cholesterol without medication.
It Started With 15 Minutes
Six months ago, with Leigh cheering me on, I made a commitment to my health. I started small: just 15 minutes of exercise every day for 30 days, no exceptions. That habit was HARD at first, but it grew into regular strength training, and it helped me go from playing Pickleball 1 day a week to 5 or 6 days.
If you are wondering whether that is really enough to matter, here is the honest answer: consistency beats intensity, especially at the start. A small daily habit you actually keep will do more for your blood sugar than an ambitious plan you abandon in two weeks.
And you do not need a gym. Sometimes my strength training is as simple as stopping at every bench in the park during a walk and doing a set of squats and push-ups on the bench. Sometimes I do lunges between Pickleball games. The point is to keep showing up, safely, in a way that fits your day.
Using Food as Medicine
To reverse my diabetes completely, I needed a diet overhaul. Although I had been vegan for many years, I realized there was room for improvement. I was eating too many empty and processed carbohydrates, too much refined sugar, and not enough good fats. My body was not happy.
I shifted to a mostly whole-food, plant-based diet, paid closer attention to my macronutrients, and truly started using food as medicine.
I dropped toast at breakfast and started eating tofu and veggie scrambles, or steel cut oats with sunflower butter and berries, adding extra protein and fiber with hemp, flax, and chia seeds.
I eat loads of vegetables every day that span the colours of the rainbow, and my carbs are nutrient and protein-dense, like chickpeas, quinoa, and lentils. And tofu is my best friend.
The Changes Were Remarkable
Within just 2 weeks, I was able to stop taking my diabetes medication. Six months later, my blood sugar stays in a healthy range through diet and exercise alone. I have also lost 20 pounds, my body's inflammation has gone down, my energy has soared, and I feel healthier than I have in years. My knees do not complain when I get up off the couch. I feel like a new woman.
This journey reminded me that lasting change does not have to start with huge leaps or painful sacrifices. It starts with one small decision, repeated consistently.
The most valuable thing I have learned since joining the Vintage Fitness team is that strength training is the most powerful tool for healthy aging. Combined with nourishing whole foods and regular movement, it can change not only how you move, but how you feel. It can help heal you from the inside out.
If you are reading this for a parent or loved one, know that the path I describe is gentle by design. It does not require a hardcore routine or a dramatic lifestyle change overnight. It requires support, encouragement, and a plan that fits the person you love.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can you really reverse type 2 diabetes naturally?
- Many people are able to bring their blood sugar back into a healthy range through diet, exercise, and weight management, sometimes reducing or stopping medication. Results vary by person, and every change should be made with your healthcare provider.
- How much exercise do I need to start?
- Yvette began with just 15 minutes a day. Starting small and staying consistent is more effective than an intense plan you cannot maintain. Even short daily walks with a few strength moves add up.
- Why is strength training so important for seniors?
- Strength training helps preserve muscle, protect joints, improve balance, and support healthy blood sugar. It is one of the most powerful tools for staying independent and mobile as you age.
- Do I need a gym or special equipment?
- No. A park bench, a set of stairs, or your own body weight is enough to begin. A Vintage Fitness trainer can build a safe routine around what you have at home.
