Your Questions Answered: In-Home Personal Training for Seniors

>
Leigh Graham, founder of Vintage Fitness — Curious About Training with Vintage Fitness?

If you have been thinking about working with a personal trainer but are not quite sure what to expect, you are not alone. A lot of the older adults I work with tell me the biggest hurdle was not the fitness itself — it was taking that first step. So I sat down to answer some of the most common questions we hear at Vintage Fitness: everything from how much in-home personal training for seniors costs, to whether you can start if you use a walker. (Spoiler: yes, you absolutely can.)

Watch the video below, or read through the Q&A. Either way, I hope it gives you the clarity and confidence to reach out.

Watch: Common Questions About Starting with Vintage Fitness

If you would rather read, here are the answers to every question covered in the video.

How Can Vintage Fitness Help Me, and Where Do I Start?

The best place to start is our website, vintagefitness.ca. We have a lot of free resources there, including exercises you can try right away, client testimonials, and information on how to contact us. Seeing what other people have accomplished — people just like you — can really help you picture what is possible for yourself.

What If I Am 87 Years Old and Use a Walker? Can I Still Get Help?

Absolutely, and you would not be our oldest client — we have worked with people all the way up to 96. We have seen clients shed their mobility devices entirely after a period of strength training with us. We work on balance, mobility, agility, and cardiovascular strength, so all your bases are covered. You can start at any age and any fitness level.

What Happens When I Call?

When you call, you will connect with Sid, who will learn about your goals and match you with a trainer in your area who is well suited to your specific needs. From there, we will schedule a Zoom call with you, Sid, and your trainer to talk through what your program could look like and when you will get started.

What Happens at My First Session?

Your first session includes a thorough assessment so we can establish a clear baseline of where you are starting. That way, we can track your progress carefully over time and show you at regular intervals how much you have improved. Seeing that progress is one of the biggest motivators to keep going.

How Often Should I Train?

We recommend at least twice a week for the best results. Clients who commit to two sessions a week for six months or more tend to see the biggest, most lasting improvements.

How Much Does It Cost, and Do I Have to Travel to You?

We come right to your home — that is the Vintage Fitness model. Sessions are approximately $100 per hour. Our pricing is competitive with personal trainers who are not even specialized in working with seniors, and every one of our trainers is.

Can Exercise Really Help Reduce My Fall Risk?

Yes, and this is one of the most important things we work on. Here is something that might surprise you: the fear of falling actually makes you more likely to fall. At Vintage Fitness, we work with every client on the techniques to get up safely from the floor, and on building the strength that reduces the chance of ending up there in the first place.

What Are Your Trainers' Qualifications?

We have 25 trainers working across the Greater Toronto Area — men and women of diverse ages and backgrounds, all of them passionate about working with seniors. Many have specialized credentials including physiotherapy backgrounds, registered kinesiologist designations, and gerontology training. You will have real choices when it comes to finding the right fit.

What If I Am Not Quite Ready to Commit? Are There Free Resources?

Yes. Every six to eight weeks, we run full-length webinars on health and fitness topics for seniors — everything from exercise techniques to general well-being. You can find all our past webinars under Free Resources on vintagefitness.ca. Sign up for our newsletter and we will let you know when the next one is scheduled so you can join us live.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

As I always say: there is no time like the present. You do not need to get ready — you are already ready. Whether you have one more question or you are set to get started, I would love to hear from you.

With gratitude,
